Dominica, officially the Commonwealth of Dominica, is an island nation in the Caribbean Sea. To the north-northwest lies Guadeloupe, to the southeast Martinique. Its size is 754 square kilometres (291 sq mi) and the highest point in the country is Morne Diablotins, which has an elevation of 1447 metres (4747 ft). The Commonwealth of Dominica has an estimated population of 72500. The capital is Roseau. Dominica has been nicknamed the "Nature Isle of the Caribbean" for its seemingly unspoiled natural beauty. It is the youngest island in the Lesser Antilles, still being formed by geothermal-volcanic activity, as evidenced by the world's second-largest boiling lake. The island features lush mountainous rainforests, home of many rare plant, animal, and bird species. There are xeric areas in some of the western coastal regions, but heavy rainfall can be expected inland. The Sisserou Parrot (also known as the Imperial Amazon), the island's national bird, is featured on the national flag. Dominica's economy is heavily dependent on both tourism and agriculture. Christopher Columbus named the island after the day of the week on which he spotted it, a Sunday (dominica in Latin), November 3, 1493. In the next hundred years after Columbus' landing, Dominica remained isolated, and even more Caribs settled there after being driven from surrounding islands as European powers entered the region. France formally ceded possession of Dominica to the United Kingdom in 1763. The United Kingdom ...

Dominica is widely recognised as a world leader in responsible tourism. It was the first ever country to receive a Benchmark designation by international eco-tourism organisation Green Globe, back in 2004. The islands success comes from the fact that it has not had to develop a green tourism product put simply, sustainable tourism is the only kind of tourism Dominica has ever offered. The natural landscape and local people are key to Dominicas tourism industry. The island has no international chain hotels or large resorts and most businesses are locally owned and run. Local communities are the force behind hotels, guesthouses and tour companies, and in return, tourism benefits local villages and community projects both financially and through imparting knowledge and resources to help all Dominicans live a sustainable lifestyle. This video demonstrates why Dominica has earned its nickname The Nature Island and looks at how sustainable tourism is helping the island and its people to thrive.

Firstly, lets start off with what Dominica isn't. It's not the Dominican Republic and it's not your cliché Caribbean island. Consider it Costa Rica of the Caribbean, at least in my eyes. There is no other island in this sector that remotely resembles the sheer topography wow factor that Dominica possesses. This mountainous paradise is mostly volcanic and has very few manicured beaches therefore tourism has developed rather slowly. It has a dense rain forest, freshwater lakes, hot springs and jaw dropping waterfalls - I'm talkin' national geographic status! I managed to capture some shaky amateurish video of an uncharted black sand beach not even the locals or taxi drivers know about. We tend, I think, to romanticize poverty when it's surrounded by natural beauty. It's a country that's proud of it's indigenous population, its lifestyle make its people some of the happiest in the world from what I gather. Barely scraping by on banana, aloe and soap exports this impoverished country welcomes the true eco-tourists who come to gape. Despite Dominica being a very underdeveloped island not always preferable for the average traveler, I do plan on revisiting to spend more time exploring the hidden gems for your post viewing pleasure.

Dominica is a beautiful unspoiled island in the Caribbean, as close to nature in its purest form as you will find on this planet. Unfortunately the people of Dominica are suffering under a greedy and ruthless regime. Many friends of Dominica are concerned that if this regime is not stopped, the country will suffer further and one of earths last un-spoilt islands will be lost forever.
